The St. Louis Climate Summit

Speaker: Jack Fishman

Bio: Jack Fishman was born and grew up in St. Louis before returning to join faculty of Saint Louis University in 2011 where he is a Professor in the Department of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences and the Director of the Center for Environmental Sciences.  He received Masters (1974) and PhD (1977) degrees in Meteorology from SLU after graduating from the University of Missouri-Columbia in 1971 with a Bachelors degree in Math/Chemistry.  He did post-doctoral research at the National Center for Atmospheric Research in Boulder CO and at the Max Planck Institute for Chemistry in Mainz, Germany.  In 1979, he moved to Hampton VA, where he was a senior research scientist at NASA’s Langley Research Center 1979 to 2010.  Throughout his career, his research has focused on the area of global-scale atmospheric chemistry.  While at NASA, Dr. Fishman pioneered the use of satellite observations to provide a unique and eye-opening perspective of the extent of global pollution.  He is the author or co-author of approximately 120 citable works and has written two books for general audiences, one of which, The Weather Revolution, Innovations and Imminent Breakthroughs in Accurate Forecasts, received the American Meteorological Society’s Louis J. Batten Outstanding Author Award (best book for nontechnical audiences) in 1997.  While at NASA, he received the Agency’s Exceptional Scientific Achievement Medal (the highest award given to a research scientist) in 1993, and later received Distinguished Alumni Awards from both the University of Missouri and Saint Louis University.  Jack was elected a Fellow of the American Meteorological Society in 2010.  He is the Chair of The Saint Louis Climate Summit, an international conference that will take place in April 2018 and is part of Saint Louis University’s Bicentennial celebration.
